We're looking for a Senior Java Back-end engineer who can hit the ground running, take ownership of initiatives end-to-end, and thrive in a startup environment where you don't wait for direction — you identify the problem and drive the solution. You'll work directly with the VP of Engineering on the APIs and data pipelines that power our platform, with real influence over architecture decisions. This is a hands-on IC role; you'll write production code every day and be expected to lead from the front.

What you'll do

• Design, build, and maintain RESTful and event-driven microservices in Java (and Python optional)
• Own and extend integrations with third-party platforms — CRMs, EMRs, marketing automation, and analytics tools
• Build and maintain data pipelines that move, transform, and deliver structured data reliably
• Instrument services for observability (logging, tracing, alerting) and participate in on-call rotation
• Lead technical initiatives: scope the work, surface blockers early, and pull in what you need to ship
• Participate actively in code reviews — explain your design decisions clearly, incorporate feedback constructively
• Communicate technical trade-offs and progress clearly and concisely to both engineering peers and non-technical stakeholders

What we're looking for

• 4+ years of recent back-end engineering experience with Java
• Strong foundation in building production-grade REST APIs and microservices
• Comfortable using AI coding assistants (e.g. Claude Code) as a productivity multiplier
• Proficiency with relational databases; ability to write and optimize SQL queries
• Excellent written and verbal communication — you answer questions clearly and concisely, and you're comfortable defending your technical choices in a review
• Self-directed and proactive: you identify what's needed, ask for it, and own outcomes without being managed step-by-step
• Startup experience — you know what it means to operate with lean resources and high expectations

Nice to have

• Experience in healthcare tech (HIPAA familiarity a plus)
• Background with conversational AI, LLM APIs, NLP platforms, or chatbot infrastructure
• Familiarity with Kubernetes, Terraform, or infrastructure-as-code
