ABOUT BRIGHTSEED
Brightseed is a pioneer in biosciences and artificial intelligence (A.I.) that illuminates nature to restore human health. Brightseed’s proprietary A.I., Forager®, accelerates bioactive discovery, biological validation and ingredient formulation from years to months, rapidly revealing new connections between nature and humanity. Through Forager® and clinical evaluation, Brightseed partners with organizations across the consumer health continuum to offer insight into the world of bioactives and health solutions. Visit www.brightseedbio.com to learn more.
ABOUT BIOACTIVES
Bioactives are small molecule compounds produced by plants, fungi, and microbes that grow in and adapt to environments that present a wide range of challenges to their survival. Bioactives also benefit the health of humans – they are the enlivening caffeine in tea, the powerful antioxidant lycopene in tomatoes or curcumin in turmeric, and they inform active ingredients in medicines like Taxol, aspirin and Metformin, the latter a first-line treatment for Type 2 diabetes derived from the French lilac flower. Science has long known that bioactives are critical to human health, yet the vast majority remain unknown and uncharted – often referred to as the “dark matter” of nutrition. Brightseed’s A.I., Forager®, discovers bioactives in nature and maps them to human health outcomes at a rate and accuracy that was previously impossible.
ABOUT THE ROLE
You are a food scientist, with experience developing consumer product prototypes and processes, to help deliver functional ingredients to the food, beverage and supplement industry. You have been involved in key product development and commercialization activities, at the bench, pilot, and commercial scale, for ingredient use in consumer products such as supplement (tablets, caplets, gummies, powders) and food & beverage (Snacks, bars, cereals, etc) prototypes; and you have conducted/coordinated sensory analyses. Ultimately, your work will result in our Product Formulation team developing compelling, differentiated ingredients, and on-trend consumer product prototypes, that support and accelerate our selling efforts and engagement with customers.

YOUR IMPACT

  • Produce bioactive-rich product formulations at lab-, pilot- and commercial-scales to support product development and regulatory authorization initiatives.
  • Develop recipes/formulations for new products on customer or internal request by testing ingredients in the laboratory and creating prototypes/samples while also managing sensory testing and reports.
  • Partnering with Ingredient Product Development, Discovery and Analytical Science functions and external material suppliers to bring prototype concepts to life on the benchtop.
  • Prepare samples for customer presentations and participate in product cuttings providing support to Sales.
  • Proactively search and develop alternative sources (vendors) to build a list of possible new suppliers for purchasing ingredients to achieve procurement cost savings and/or improve prototype quality and/or shelf-life.
  • Test new application ideas through literature review and experimental design and collect and analyze data using analytical process tools to provide recommendations.
  • Translate emerging ingredient science into impactful application processes.
  • Bring technical rigor to troubleshoot ingredient application technical issues with active customers.
  • Track inventory of materials used in lab and co-man trials (including lab equipment); maintain inventory (order, receive, store in designated areas) and ensure appropriate inventory rotation.
  • Create SOPs to document all application lab processes (as newly developed or to reflect changed processes).
  • Identify new lab equipment requirements and actively participate in its commissioning.
  • Maintain good lab practices, records of recipes/formulations, manufacturing processes and product specifications (raw materials, prototypes).

YOUR QUALIFICATIONS

  • BSc degree in Food Science, Chemical Engineering, Food Engineering, Chemistry or allied discipline with ~5 years of industry experience (MS preferred).
  • Hands-on bench experience to support both scale-up and scale-down research efforts.
  • Experience building, commissioning and maintaining bench and pilot-scale equipment.
  • Additional experience with one or more of the following a plus: commercial product manufacturing, food processing, plant raw material sourcing and food supply chains and Techno-economic assessment.
  • Must have the ability to execute DOE and utilize statistical analysis of data while using nutritional data bases such as Product Vision and Genesis.
  • Ability to adapt and excel in a rapidly moving environment while prioritizing and managing multiple projects/workload.
  • Self-starter with good organizational skills; able to work effectively in cross-functional teams, providing strong analytical, process design, and root cause analysis skills
  • Knowledge of how to search for and apply Food Standard of Identity and regulatory requirements.
  • Attention to details that includes rigorous review of the data and record-keeping.
  • Proficient in Excel,Microsoft Word, and PowerPoint.
